Just as soldiers will panic when they are shot at. If a large intimidating man attacked most martial artists in the street at night they would panic too. Hardened MMA fighters wouldn't but that is a low percentage of fighters, a Shaolin master wouldn't either.

Punching a wall decreases nerve sensitivity in the hands meaning you can punch someone in the face harder and for longer than anyone else. Strengthening the neck allows you to be punched in the face for harder and longer. Strengthening and pain training your skull allows a similar effect.

The KTD attacked with kicks fast enough to flatten out most people before they know what hit them, yet the Monk not only blocked, but he parried them.
